style="text-align: justify;">Workers reporting dependence on alcohol or drugs are more likely to have worked for more than three employers in the past year. Likewise, those workers have skipped work more than two days in the past month because of injuries occurred while under the influence. Co-workers job performance and attitudes are negatively affected. Workers have reported being put in danger, having been injured, or having had to work harder, to re-do work, or to cover for a co-worker as a result of a fellow employee’s drinking.

Our aim as KADC with these workplace workshop is to make employees aware of the gangers of substance abuse in one’s life, especially in the working environment and how it could affect other aspects of your life. The following is a brief summary of the different workplace workshops we had in June and July.

WORKING FOR WATER IN DIEPWALLE AND BLOUKRANS TSITSIKAMMA

Both these teams we had to divide them into 4 groups because they were very big teams. The working for water employees are grouped into very smaller groups and have a contractor leading them. KADC have workshops with Working for Water employees every year, so one has to constantly upgrade the information that you give them.

So all these groups were summoned to one point for the workshop.

We had to be very creative and think out of the box in order to take control of the big group. The guy in the picture is trying to share with the group what he thinks the role of a parent is in a community, because one of the reasons that causes the youth to abuse is the lack of having role models. The aim of this discussion was for them to create a communication channel in the work place for the younger people and elders in their different working groups to understand each other better. We need to start closing the gaps between young and old.

The nice thing about these workshops with working for water employees is that they teach you a lot of things happening in the bush that are substance abuse related. And what their understanding of substance abuse is.

SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL PARKS (SANPARKS)

While the rain was pouring outside, the elders gave them a good time with the team of KADC doing icebreakers and energisers to keep the blood worm and running. once again they were reminded of the joys of being young and fresh. The majority of this group were male. The theme of the workshop was “GETTING INFORMATION IN A FUN WAY”. This workplace took place at Ebb & Flo in Wilderness.

These workshops were divided into three sections. Wilderness group, Knysna group and Tsitsikamma group because of the big number of these general workers and the different areas that they work in. And at all these workshops, some of the management members were present at these workshops.

Our focus point’s at all three different workshops were:

How using substances affect non users in the working environment and how dangerous it can be to the non users life.

What prevents people or our communities from seeking help and whether they know how one goes about getting help in their communities?

Its time to take action in order to make our working environment a better working place for everyone.
